Periwinkle-the baby dragon

by Corey Aislinn

Many tales the baby dragon Periwinkle heard about noble dragons and their great deeds, while he sat warm on his mother’s tummy in the shaded forest nest. And after he had finally slipped away into sleep he would dream of doing great deeds himself. And upon awaking he would go to the pixies that abounded in the forest to reenact the great deeds.

Now the stories that fascinated him the most where those of dragons that risked it all to rescue damsels from cruel tyrants, and protected them against knights who would tried to take them back to a horrible fate. And so he longed to find a damsel to rescue, but he was not sure what this was.

So every couple of days he would fly out with the pixies to try to find someone who would claim to be a damsel, but never could he find such a thing. Nor did he find anyone who knew what one was, the hedgehogs ever helpful said they thought it might be a girl of some sort but whether this would be rabbit, or a hamster they could not say. And so Periwinkle flew about rescuing every female animal he could find, but none of them seemed happy at being rescued.

Now as it happened in a place not to far off from the terrified little animals that Periwinkle was carrying to “safety,” rested a small castle made of the blackest stone, the Greyest slate, and the tastiest candies. For this was the home of the witch of the woods and her new husband the black knight.

With such a terrible combination it should be no surprise that there was a damsel in distress, this one though happened to be named Damsel. Now Damsel was a truly poor servant girl, so poor that she was oppressed even by the other servants. Forced to Clean after the horribly messy knights and help the witch pick the biting spiders out of her hair, and to feed and bath her sadistic witch’s cat.

Every night Damsel would try to cry her self to sleep but she rarely could for she was not allowed enough time to go to sleep on most nights. So she wandered the corridors zombie like carrying out the tasks in a slow way that would anger her cruel masters even more.

Now on the day she was sent to get water from the well, (which was obviously in the dark and scariest part of the woods it could be). Periwinkle happened to fly past, and spotted her. Though he had never seen a human of any kind before something in his heart and mind quivered and he knew that here must be a damsel,

So he landed before her. Now most people would scream on seeing a dragon even a baby one, but the girl merely looked on for she was too tired to scream. Periwinkle wasted no time in asking her if she was a damsel in distress. Confused at how this dragon new so much about her already she told him her troubles, told him about the wicked witch and the horrible nasty people who lived in the castle. And this was all Periwinkle needed to here, for before she could finish her story he grabbed her and carried her straight away into the enchanted forest.
