Creating Memerable Characters for Fantasy Role Playing Games
You must begin the process of creating an
effective character by determining first what that characters role is
in your game. All characters have a role to play within your fantasy
world, even if that role is as simple as to provide some connection
with the people of an area and so is nothing more then a simple peasant
that character has a peasant. In reality such characters are never
perfect, however your goal is to create something better then reality
so you must thing of what traits would be best for achieving the
characters goal within your story.
Remmember that the traits you choose for the character need the
oppertunity to come out in him or her in the time that the characters
meet them, for many role playing games such meetings are very short, so
it is typically better to choose strong and more obvious traits. This
is one advantage fairy tales have in role playing game creation, much
like these games fairy tales only have a short time to introduce
characters and so they do so very quickly.
It would often times help in the creation of an NPC if you begin by
writing a short bio on the character. In this way you will be better
able discover the characters thoughts and feelings and so will be in a
better position to portray them and make the character act in a
consistant way.
Archtypes are very effective in fantasy stories and RPG's because the
idea of archtypes came through the study of the first fantasy stories
the folktales of the world. For this reason archtypes such as the wise
wizard can be played fairly well in your campaigns, people expect and
in many ways are comforted by the archtypes. However at teh same type
archtypes are used a lot in fantasy, so your role playing game will
benifit if you use them spereringly.
Instead of using an archtype you can begin with one, some character you
have seen befor in a books, or fairy tale, etc. You can then begin to
add different traits onto that character even as you take some away.
When you are done what you will have will not resemble the original
however as starting the design of a characters traits is difficult
having a starting point makes the process go a lot faster. For those
who have read a lot such a starting point is easily found in the
characters of other books. Remmember that such books do not have to be
fantasy books, they can be books of any kind, for the characters used
in fantasy worlds are not exclusive to fantasy worlds.
