Using Fairies in your RPG

Fairy Dances

Intro

In the dark of the vanished moon with the smell of wild trees and freshly wet moss a sound drifts over the hills and meadows, like the tinkling of bells at first subtle but pleasant. Then it rises, rises to a wild musical cascade thrilling the distant camp and drawing it inhabitants in. Like insects to the light they draw closer to the sound, unable to resist the pull the energy of its happiness and excitement.

A break in the trees and wild lights from a thousand illusions and glamour’s shows them dancing fairies and creatures from stumpy red goblin creatures, to wispy and beautiful humanoids they dance around and through the colors of their magic.

Still unable to resist the humans join in, for one night it would seem the dance with joy and glee like they have never known, and then when morning comes they dance no more for in that one night they touched what no mortal should and aged a hundred years to die at dawn.

For RPG

Fairy dances are strange things, wonderful, wild, beautiful and dangerous for mortals they are like a magical ritual that they fey can perform. Such a ritual can have a number of purposes, causing powerful magical effects like multiple wishes, or epic spells.

Any human who hears or sees a fairy dance must roll a will save or be drawn into it, the dance itself will be very enjoyable, and any human who can participate in the dance and survive will likely make friends with some of the fairies that participated in the dance.

For all those who don’t have the dance of the fey feat however the dance will have one of the following effects

-moving them back in time 20-200 years

-moving them forward in time 20-200 years

-Aging them 20-200 years

-causing them to be unable to stop dancing until they die

-causing a permanent insanity only curable by wish or miracle

-causing them to disappear into the fairy realm a prisoner forever

Fairy Forms and adding them to your RPG
Fairies in myth take on many forms they can cause mortals to be happy, sad, make their food burn, or create many other annoyances and assistances. In RPG’s there are many fairies that can do some of these things but true fairies that shift from one form to another are the Faery. These fairies have the ability to shift and change according to their mood which is in constant flux. They entertain themselves by affecting the natural world much as a child entertains itself by finger painting or playing with ants. This comparison of a child to the fairy is a use full one as their humor is often juvenile or just plain strange. They will make humans step in poop; create holes in their pockets for items to fall out of, put pins in their cloths and more. Other times they become completely ethereal and enter a humans mind causing emotions and confusions. This type of fairy (the faery) are a very useful plot element for all GM’s to use in RPG campaigns because they allow them to manipulate events at will while keeping their thoughts within reach of the PC’s.

Although useful other fairies may be better for manipulating events however, the Pawa’s are puck like characters, fairies who love playing more then simple jokes, they enjoy complex conspiracies that accumulate in the absurd. Pixies also have their uses, though typically it is for more simple practical jokes. Lobs and Bogles also make wonderful fairies for creating quests the PC’s must go on for these fairies will often have large and horrifying conspiracies aimed at harming mankind.

In lands filled with fairies it would seem that the chaos of their tricks would stop humanity cold, making impossible for them to survive. It’s important to remember that fairies in most lands where humans live fairies are more benevolent then not. There are exceptions top this of course dark places where humans are prey to be hunted by the cruel fey.

Normally however Fairies are muses; they help those in need find coins, help to keep items in good repair, prevent roofs from leaking and wells from getting contaminated. Humans for their part rarely notice such workings of the fey for it is easy to notice that one has stepped in dog poo but not so easy to notice that one has not’t gotten sick from drinking the water from their well.

RPG Fairies and Forces of Nature

In myth and legend fairies where often responsible for changing the seasons and playing a magical world where this is completely the case could be fun. Having fairies responsible for most of nature could help ad new elements to the campaign. It could also afford many new opportunities for quests, when a lich kidnaps the fairies responsible for bringing on spring. Or when the fairy that makes it rain grows angry with mortals and decides to stop. In other cases just the opportunity for those PC’s able to watch fairies changing the leaves color can help create wonderful mental pictures to add to the effect of a campaign.

In other cases the fairies in your RPG may not have total control over nature but could have partial control, using control whether spells or simple glamour they could alter the seasons, grow flowers where they want them to be in the spring time, make the leaves change the color they want to. In this case or even in the above one the world is a sort of canvas for fairies. This also allows the GM to create many new types of nature fairies and perhaps to allow the PCs to befriend or gain quests from these fairies directly.

Half Fairies in RPG’s

Half Fairies are a more common occurrence then most humans could possibly imagine, after all with changing switches and fairies and mortals falling in love with each other such mixings are inevitable. Many half fairies never realize what they are, they in their mind are human or fairy depending on where they where raised.

The majority of half fairies do come to realize who they are and find themselves cast in a world somewhere between that of fairies and that of humans. This is where many of the legends of fairies living as humans come from, for the half fairies do live in much the same way as humans do with their own set of kings, queens, and the like.

Oil of Fairy Seeing

Once rubbed on the eyes of any being that being is able to see the fairy world. It is made from a closely guarded secret set of herbs by the half fairies that use it in order to live on the outskirts of the hidden fairies world. For a none half fairy to take it is very dangerous for the half fairies and fairies do not want their world revealed and will poke out the offending eyes should they notice that the mortal is seeing more then they should.
